My guess is that Cass McCombs doesn’t pick up too many new fans with his latest video, Big Wheel. The song, from last year’s album Big Wheel and Others, is a tongue in cheek statement about manliness set to a driving beat that sounds like trucker music. For the video, McCombs turns to his friend and prior collaborator Albert Herter, who creates a collage of way too many images and words. The video is intended to be chaotic but I find it too confusing to make much of a statement. That said, McCombs is an artist who takes a lot of chances and that’s one of the reasons I like him. Herter worked on McCombs’ album illustrations, including the cover art for his latest release.
