Women’s movement: St. Vincent, Angel Olsen, EMA make year’s best albums

Years ago, I knew a guy who declared he didn’t like female rock bands. They just weren’t as good as dudes, he said. Pity him. There are so many great women-led bands with new albums this year, I can make an argument for the year’s overall top 10 just restricting to the female groups.

Sure, it’s only mid-July but here’s the year’s 10 best albums that happen to be fronted by women.

1. St. Vincent – St. Vincent.

2. Angel Olsen – Burn Your Fire for No Witness.

3. EMA– The Future’s Void.

4. Dum Dum Girls – Too True.

5. Neneh Cherry – Blank Project.

6. La Sera – Hour of the Dawn.

7. Sharon Van Etten – Are We There.

8. Cherry Glazerr – Haxel Princess.

9. Cold Beat – Over Me.

10. Courtney Barnett – The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas (U.S. release).

You can check out Neneh Cherry, Sharon Van Etten, St. Vincent and Dum Dum Girls at Pitchfork fest this weekend.
