Ex Hex to scorch Empty Bottle Saturday

Rips, the just-released debut album from Mary Timony’s latest band Ex Hex, blows me away. I love music that straddles ’70s punk and ’70s pop, and this record is a scorcher.

Timony’s previous, short-lived group Wild Flag (which also featured Carrie Brownstein) was fantastic both live and on record. Rips is an almost perfect pop-punk album and it’s instantly a contender for my top 10 of the year.

Check out Ex Hex with openers Speedy Ortiz and Chicago’s Split Feet at Empty Bottle, Saturday night.
