Axis: Sova is Brett Sova, a Chicago guitar shredder whose influences range from Hendrix to the Velvet Underground to early hardcore punk. A one-man band when he records, Sova adds two musicians (playing guitar and bass — no drums) to perform on tour. He’ll be making a stop at Hideout on Saturday.
Sova’s recently released second album, Early Surf, is a mess. A lot of stops and starts, mucho guitar and a real lack of unity. And yet, I can’t stop listening to it. It may be one of my favorite albums this year. Sova also caught the attention of Ty Segall, who released the album on his God? Records imprint (part of Chicago’s Drag City).
