Having been a fan of Canada’s No Joy for the past few years, I was struck by how commercial the band’s new album, More Faithful, sounded compared with the earlier, grittier releases. In place of some of the edginess is a more accessible pop sound, which, as it turns out, is a nice addition to this summer’s batch of new releases.
There’s more musical range on More Faithful, No Joy’s third full-length album. At first blush, it’s almost jarring to go from the My Bloody Valentine-inspired sound of earlier releases to an easier going, light song such as the single Moon in my Mouth. But the songs here are good and there are still uptempo tracks like Hollywood Teeth.
Out today, More Faithful is recommended.
