It takes a minute and a half for the first song, Falling In, to kick in on GØGGS‘ self-titled debut album. But when it does, the payoff is phenomenal. This is the type of song that works people into a frenzy at live shows. It’s quiet, then it builds and boom! The pit explodes.
Ty Segall, his longtime collaborator Charles Moothart (Fuzz) and Ex-Cult frontman Chris Shaw make up the band, which plays primarily vintage hard-core punk married with classic rock elements. It’s also very melodic.
I’ve listened to a lot of great albums this year but this is, hands down, the most exciting.
Shaw’s severe singing, Moothart’s guitars and Segall’s brutal drums (that’s right — Ty drums on this album) add up to a great release that clocks in just under 26 minutes.
If you like hard rock, if you love punk and if you like rock, period, this album is worth a listen.
Also, check out the band for two nights at Empty Bottle July 19 and 20.
