A number of great albums were released in recent months. Here’s a roundup of some of the best.
I fell in love with the sugary pop bliss of this album, which also features great horns. This is Big Star, Van Morrison and ’70s K-Tel magic wrapped in one awesome bubble-gum package.
If you’ve heard Antony and the Johnsons, you were likely taken back by the unique voice of Antony. The voice is the same but the singer now identifies herself as a woman and performs as Anohni. This is the debut album of Anohni and it’s excellent. The electronic beats laid down behind these vocals really seals it.

Fans of Australian sensation Courtney Barnett definitely need to check out the awesome Frankie Cosmos of New York. Next Thing doesn’t follow the deadpan act Barnett delivers, but the sentiment, sarcasm and emotion is the same. On the Lips is a highlight.
Holy Ghost almost sounds more like a holdover from the 1980s than the bands it emulates. This is a modern modification of the ’80s sound that actually seems to validate the art of synth pop that was ubiquitous back in the day. Crime Cutz is a four-song album that packs a lot of fun in a short amount of space.

This is another short album — it’s just four songs. But Foiled Again is a nice companion to last year’s Foil Deer. I love the tough opener, Death Note.
