Big Thief, touring its great debut album, hits Chicago area again

Big Thief doesn’t come across as a band audacious enough to call its debut album Masterpiece. But here we are. This buzzed-about album really is good.

If you don’t believe me, ask Jeff Tweedy: “Great guitars, great lyrics, great melodies … what more could you possibly want,” Tweedy wrote on Twitter recently.

Sharon Van Etten also is a fan.

Big Thief’s music reminds me a little of Van Etten but it also recalls Jason Molina in parts, including on the title track. There’s a lot of pop, rock, country and folk to please a lot of musical palates.

Check out the band at Space in Evanston Wednesday.

These guys already played at least two shows in Chicago this year. The gig at Space is a headlining slot.
