Rays, Splashh, Anna Altman, Pile, White Reaper: Five albums to grab now

The Rays

There’s a lot of good music to catch up on. So, here are my latest recommendations for five truly killer albums, including some under-the-radar releases you should be diving into.

Rays – Rays

This is a great debut from a super cool Oakland garage punk/post-punk band. This album nods to a number of great musical tastes, including Modern Lovers, Wire, Velvet Underground and ’80s new wave. These guys, who appear in Chicago at Do Division this weekend, draw on some of the same influences copped by Parquet Courts.

And these albums are excellent as well:

Splashh – Waiting a Lifetime

Waiting a Lifetime is an impressive sophomore album from this solid English pop-rock band.

Anna Altman – Freightliner

The New York duo Anna Altman makes haunting, immediate music. This should appeal to fans of Sonic Youth and the many like-minded bands.

Pile – A Hairshirt of Purpose

Boston band Pile careens between punk, post punk and rock. The album is really compelling.

White Reaper – The World’s Best American Band

This album really rocks and is a lot of fun, much like it’s last album. Did I mention it’s from the great music city Louisville?
