Amyl and the Sniffers
Here are nine albums, all released this year, that are flying a little under the radar and are definitely worth checking out.
Amyl and the Sniffers – Amyl and the Sniffers
I caught this band at Chicago’s Wicker Park Festival and it was amazing. Imagine Stooges marry AC/DC. Great hard rock , garage and punk.
Julian Leal of Romeoville, Illinois, probably should’ve been bigger. He made great power-pop in the mid-80s, and, thankfully, his debut was just reissued by Hozac Records.
In a little more than 9 minutes, the Lindas pack a lot of fresh punk into the band’s debut. Released by the legendary Burger Records, I look forward to more from these So-Cal punks.
Bloodshot Bill – Come Get Your Love Right Now
This sounds like a mid-20th century country / rockabilly classic recorded by a southern rocker. But Bloodshot Bill hails from Montreal and the great Goner Records put out his latest album.
Cosmonauts are dependable garage rockers. The band’s latest is out on Burger Records.
Mike Donovan – Exurbian Quonset
This is lo-fi goodness on Chicago’s Drag City label. You’ll be hooked on the opener Digital Dan.
Sunwatchers makes whacked-out jazz instrumentals married to psychedelia that are reminiscent of music made in the 1960s and ’70s. It’s very cool stuff on Chicago’s super-cool Trouble in Mind label.
The Resonars have an early Beatles vibe going on the band’s latest album. It’s another good one from Trouble in Mind.
This is an exciting punk-post punk album on John Dwyer’s Castle Face Records.
