Kim Gordon, Big Thief, Angel Olsen, Gong Gong Gong: Best of the fall releases

The fall album releases are always a thrill. Here are the best that I’ve heard so far. All but one of the albums were released in October.

Kim Gordon – No Home Record
Kim Gordon has been making great music over a four-decade career. She just released her first solo album and it’s a really good one. Sometimes uncomfortable, No Home Record is punk, experimental, electronic and poetic all at once. We can no longer look forward to new Sonic Youth albums, but we have Kim still making great, compelling music.

Big Thief – Two Hands
Big Thief follows a strong 2019 release, U.F.O.F. with another excellent album, Two Hands. This most recent album reminds us that the band is firmly rooted in Americana and can bring the jams.

Angel Olsen – All Mirrors
Haunting and lush building to big climaxes, All Mirrors continues Angel Olsen’s musical evolution. Long gone are the mournful folk songs accented by Olsen’s falsetto voice. This album is truly epic.

Gong Gong Gong – Phantom Rhythm
This is one of the most exciting finds of the fall. Gong Gong Gong is the Beijing duo of Joshua Frank on bass and Tom Ng playing guitar. Minimalist and largely instrumental, this album will appeal to fans of Can, Gang of Four and Velvet Underground.

Here are three more excellent offerings to consider.

Wilco – Ode to Joy
Ode to Joy is another solid album from Chicago’s favorite band.

Jenny Hval – The Practice of Love

The only September release in this roundup, this is another great album from Hval, one of the more interesting experimental artists today.

Allah Las – Lahs

Allah Las takes you to another time when psychedelia was king.
