Deeper’s Auto-Pain: Six albums in six days

This is the fifth of six recommended new indie albums I’m featuring this week.

The three members of Deeper came together around their love of Wire, Gang of Four, Television and other bands. It’s a style us music nerds call angular.

On Auto-Pain, the Chicago band continues to draw from those inspirations, creating an anachronistic sound in modern times. Like new albums by Moaning and Jackie Lynn, both releases I’ve featured this week, there’s a comfort in the familiar.

There’s also an important thread about mental health throughout the album. It’s personal for this band, which lost a former member to suicide. On Deeper’s Bandcamp profile, it says part of Auto-Pain’s proceeds will be donated to the nonprofit Hope for the Day.
