Outsider gospel singer’s debut to be released months after his death

Pastor Champion

Ever since David Byrne founded Luaka Bop in 1988, the label has made many great musical discoveries.

This spring, it will release the debut of Pastor Wylie Champion, an outsider gospel singer and guitarist who traveled the country preaching and performing.

According to his bio, Champion was raised in Louisiana, moved to California, joined a gang and later was born again.

Champion was reluctant to cooperate with the label all the way through the 2018 recording of his album, I Just Want to Be a Good Man. Taped on a vintage machine at a Baptist church in Oakland, he was also insistent that the recording have a raw sound, which the world will get to hear when it’s released April 1.

Unfortunately, Champion died late last month. His wife, Mother Champion, preceded him in death a few months earlier.
